Pumpkintown Returns to Athens for Its 23rd Year

PumpkinTown Athens, TN

Athens is about to welcome back one of East Tennessee’s most anticipated fall traditions. On Saturday, October 11th, downtown Athens will once again transform into Pumpkintown: A Festival of History, Harvest, and Heritage. From 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., thousands of visitors will gather to celebrate the season and the community’s rich cultural roots.

A Festival with History

Pumpkintown isn’t just a catchy name—it’s rooted in McMinn County’s past. The original settlement of Pumpkintown sat about two miles north of downtown Athens, on what is now Mayfield Dairy Farms. Though its exact origins are unclear, records show that Hugh Kelso served as one of the county’s earliest postmasters around 1820, delivering mail by stagecoach. At the time, McMinn County itself was brand new, having been formed in 1819 and named for Governor Joseph McMinn.

Once described as a “home for transients and ne’er-do-wells,” the settlement likely got its name from the pumpkins grown there. Legend has it that Pumpkintown was even considered as the potential site for what would become the City of Athens. While that vision didn’t pan out, the spirit of the pioneer settlement lives on through this annual festival.

Community Traditions and New Memories

Last year’s festival drew more than 26,000 attendees, and this year’s celebration promises to be just as vibrant. Visitors can expect a full day of entertainment, shopping, and family activities. Highlights include:

  • Scott Crisp Memorial PowWow – honoring Native American traditions

  • McMinn Regional Humane Society’s Mutt Strutt & Pet Costume Contest

  • 41st Annual McMinn County Living Heritage Museum Quilt Show

  • Mayfield Farm Park displays & Pumpkin Plinko

  • Over 300 vendors offering arts, crafts, food, and local products

  • Kid-friendly fun including inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo, and even larger-than-life dinosaurs

  • Three stages of live music and entertainment throughout the day

The USS Ware Reunion will also be welcomed back to Athens, with special events including a commemorative brick dedication at Veterans Park and an exhibit at the Living Heritage Museum.

A True Community Effort

Pumpkintown is made possible by Friendly City Festivals along with generous support from local sponsors, the City of Athens Tourism Fund, McMinn County Tourism Board, and many community partners. Thanks to these efforts, the festival remains free to the public—a gift to the community that brings people together year after year.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you’re coming for the history, the food, the music, or the family fun, Pumpkintown has something for everyone. It’s a chance to celebrate the best of fall while connecting with local culture, traditions, and community spirit.
