Old Fashioned Downtown Christmas: A Tradition That Lights Up Athens

For more than three decades, Old Fashioned Downtown Christmas has brought the Athens community together for one magical evening of lights, music, shopping, and holiday spirit. This year, the tradition continues — with a few exciting updates.

As Stuart Mason, President of Main Street Athens and longtime event organizer, shared on our recent episode of Main Street Moments, this year’s festival will take place Saturday, December 6th from 3–8 PM 

One thing hasn’t changed: the heart of the event. Old Fashioned Downtown Christmas is all about community, connection, and tradition. It’s the kind of night where locals run into old friends they haven’t seen since last Christmas, where dance troupes perform on the square, and where churches share music, warmth, and light with the town.

And yes — the famous Christmas tree in Market Park is back and brighter than ever. Athens’ early years featured a humble “Charlie Brown tree,” but today, the city proudly displays the beautiful, towering, LED-lit tree that’s become a holiday landmark

And you can’t forget about the snowflakes — nearly 65 of them — lovingly maintained each year by the “snowflake elves,” replaced, repaired, and hung in preparation for the season’s festivities.
